I thought that smoking once in a while was okay... but now my friend Émilie can’t seem to quit and smokes more often than before.
When I first started high school, I felt a lot of pressure to try smoking. The older kids were doing it and I wanted to be like them... but I resisted and I’m really happy about it!
« No thanks, I don't smoke. » (And remember the facts about tobacco so you don't flinch under pressure.)
« Nah, I'd rather drink Saint Bernard slobber! » Your one-liner options are endless…
« Did you know that by smoking electronic cigarettes, you're six times more likely to start smoking regular cigarettes and get addicted? »
Just keep repeating « No thanks. » If they keep pushing you, simply walk away.
When someone offers you a cigarette, ask them why they smoke (non-judgmentally, of course). This simple question often prompts the smoker to think about why they're risking their health in the first place!
In a group, having more than one non-smoker makes it easier to resist pressure. Keep your non-smoking friends close!
Just find a way to exit the conversation: « No thanks, Rob's waiting for me. I gotta go. »
If your friends don't respect your opinions and preferences, it may be time to rethink if they’re really your friends.
